Our customers will often ask us if there is anything they can do to help maintain their own A/C system. Although we recommend yearly maintenance by our Home Care technicians, there are things you can to help with the efficiency and longevity of you’re A/C system. As a homeowner, maintaining your air conditioner is an essential part of keeping your home cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. Regular maintenance can also help prevent breakdowns, extend the life of your unit, and lower your energy bills. In this blog post, we'll cover some basic maintenance tips for homeowners to keep their air conditioners in top condition.

1. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your air conditioner is to clean or replace the air filter regularly. A dirty or clogged filter can reduce airflow and make your unit work harder, which can lead to breakdowns and higher energy bills. Check your air filter at least once a month and replace it if it's dirty or clogged.

2. Clean the Coils

The evaporator and condenser coils in your air conditioner can become dirty over time, reducing the unit's efficiency. You can clean the coils by removing the outer cover and gently brushing away any dirt or debris. Be careful not to damage the coils or fins, as this can affect the unit's performance. If the coils are too dirty to clean, you will need to call Home Care to do the job.

3. Check the Drainage

Your air conditioner's condensate drain can become clogged with dirt or debris, leading to water buildup and potential water damage. Check the drain regularly and clear any clogs with a wire or vacuum. You can also pour a mixture of water and bleach down the drain to prevent algae and mold growth.

4. Inspect the Ductwork

The ductwork in your home can become dirty or damaged over time, reducing your air conditioner's efficiency and increasing your energy bills. Inspect the ductwork regularly for leaks, cracks, or signs of wear and tear. You can also hire a professional HVAC technician to clean the ductwork and seal any leaks or cracks.

By following these basic maintenance tips, you can keep your air conditioner running smoothly and efficiently all summer long. Remember, neglecting your air conditioner's maintenance can lead to breakdowns, higher energy bills, and even health hazards. So, it's essential to perform regular checks and schedule annual maintenance with Home Care Heating and Air.
